Abstract

Known for helping weaning the Catholic Church from the Conservative Party, and to separate it from the State in 1925's Constitution, the former Santiago de Chile's archbishop from 1918 to 1931, was one of the main actors of the history of chilean Church.
His Memories doesn't cover his whole life: they practically end with the nomination of presbyter Mariano Casanova as Santiago de Chile's archbishop in 1887. So, that's why its title: Some of what I saw. The text that was delivered to be published after his death, was already written by 1923. He didn't add any later fact, because while written he didn't want to evoke painful memories, but he wanted "entertainment for my tired mood" (p. 328-329). In fact, it's very incomplete memories the ones published three years after his death, but are a privileged testimony about Santiago de Chile's life, and also about the ecclesial circles of the second half of XIX century in Chile's capital city.
